HEAT EXHAUSTION SYMPTOMS

Dizziness

Light headedness

Headache

Feeling weak and fatigued

Clammy and moist skin

HEAT STROKE SYMPTOMS

Hot dry red skin

Disorientation

Confusion

Body temperature greater than 105 degrees F

Convulsing

Unconciousness

THINGS TO DO WHEN SOMEONE IS SUFFERING FROM THE ABOVE

Move them to a cooler spot preferably air conditioned watch them and call for medical assistance

Fan the person in order to increase cooling

Have the person drink plenty of water

If the person goes into convulsions or shows symptoms of heat stroke call 911 immediately and take steps to cool the person down such as soaking their clothing in cool water

AVOID HEAT RELATED ILLNESS

Drink lots of fluids throught out the day don’t wait until your thirsty to get a drink. At least a quart of water per hour is recommended

Stay away from soda, coffee, tea,and all alchoholic drinks that dehtdrate the body

Avoid large meals before working in the heat

Some prescription drugs can make you more suseptible to heat illness check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if any medicine you are on could effect you while working in the sun

Wear light weight fabric, such as cotten to keep the body cool

Wear a hat or visor

Plan the heaviest part of your work load in the coolest part of the day

Take  frequent short breaks in a shaded area and cool down

Do not take salt tablets unless recommended by your doctor

SUN EXPOSURE

Prolonged sun exposure causes skin cancer, cataracts,and other serious illness

Choose a sunscreen that is marked broad spectrum and is at least SPF15

MIT students have come up with a way to recharge your laptop without plugging it in. Rather than consuming electricity, you’ll be burning calories–your own.

The students designed and built an exercise bicycle that uses “pedaling power” to charge a laptop computer. As the bike’s instructions note, if you have trouble “squeezing in that daily exercise,” you can now “multitask with no problem–[you can] bike while you work!”
